NWS Warns of High Tornado Potential Across Vast Swath of U.S. Southeast

The National Weather Service warns of a severe winter storm threatening over 83,000 square miles across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama, affecting more than 9.1 million people. This area faces an enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes on Friday, with major cities like Montgomery AL, Columbus GA, and Fayetteville NC included. Surrounding regions also face varying levels of risk, extending to parts of Mississippi, the Florida panhandle, and border areas of Louisiana and Virginia. The Southeast is generally under a marginal risk for tornadoes, with the threat extending to the East Coast. The forecast predicts strong cyclogenesis, leading to potential supercell development and strong tornadoes. Heavy rain and flooding are expected along the East Coast, with winds up to 60 mph causing coastal flooding. This active tornado season aligns with the U.S. average of around 1,200 tornadoes a year.
Due to the continuing possibility of severe weather in our area tomorrow between noon and 6 p.m., all Coweta County Schools will be closed on Friday, January 12.
Facilities and maintenance staff should report at their regularly scheduled time due to their essential role in storm preparation. All other employees should not report to work.
All after-school and other school-related activities are canceled on Friday.
Newnan's Own Dr. Russell Crutchfield Steps Up in Governor Kemp's Latest Staff Reshuffle

In a move that brings local pride to Newnan, Governor Brian Kemp has announced a series of staffing changes in his office, with a prominent role going to one of our own. Dr. Russell Crutchfield, a respected Newnan resident, is set to take over as the state's Chief Operating Officer, following the reassignment of Kristyn Long to the role of Executive Counsel.
Long, stepping into the position by the end of the month, succeeds David Dove, who is moving on to join the prestigious Atlanta law firm Troutman Pepper as a partner. Her tenure as the state’s Chief Operating Officer has been marked by significant contributions, particularly during some of the state's most challenging periods in recent history. Her background includes various roles within the Kemp administration and a fruitful career in private practice specializing in civil and probate litigation, along with estate planning.
Filling Long's shoes is Newnan's own Dr. Russell Crutchfield, a figure well-regarded in both academic and governmental spheres. Dr. Crutchfield's journey to this prestigious position has been a storied one, serving since 2016 as Chief of Staff and Associate Vice President at the University of West Georgia. His career is a tapestry of leadership roles across several state departments, including Community Health, Public Health, and Labor.
For the residents of Newnan, Dr. Crutchfield's appointment is not just a matter of local pride but also a beacon of inspiration. It highlights how local talents can rise to significant positions in state governance. As a community, Newnan watches with anticipation and pride as one of its own steps onto the state stage, ready to bring a touch of Newnan wisdom and experience to the broader governance of Georgia. Governor Kemp's reshuffle, thus, resonates not just in the halls of the state capitol but also in the hearts of Newnan's residents, who eagerly await the impact of one of their own in these influential roles.
